Langcliffe Hall
Wellness Retreat
Sonja meticulously designed the masterplan for the Langcliffe Hall Estate, an idyllic retreat nestled in the beautiful North Yorkshire Dales. The primary aim was to create serene garden and landscape spaces that invite a sense of calm, wonder, and deep reflection. Each carefully crafted "room" is intentionally designed to slow the pace of life—providing open spaces where individuals can breathe, contemplate, and simply be present in the moment. Healing zones for meditation, creativity, and self-awareness seamlessly blend with an existing herbal walled garden as well as the elegant Elizabethan architecture that characterizes the estate.
Terraces gracefully open into thoughtfully curated landscapes, extending the home outward through seamless transitions—each unique space possessing its own rhythm, yet intricately connected to the others. Structured layouts may dissolve into the surrounding landscape in a contemporary manner, complementing a lake that serves as dual-purpose flood overflow—a bold interplay highlighting both control and the natural world. Local materials, such as limestone for the chosen construction elements, along with flora that is specifically resistant to the locality’s conditions, contribute to the project’s authenticity.
Sonja has shaped the landscape, deeply rooted in classic traditions while also fostering contemporary concepts of well-being. The historic context is thoroughly respected, with horses freely roaming, and the unused barn patiently awaits a thoughtful vision. This is landscape as experience—layered, alive, and profoundly felt. Moreover, estate management has been envisioned with a comprehensive life cycle in mind, encompassing the harvesting of wild meadows, equestrian activities, and the thoughtful utilization of manure for organic farming—all adding significant value to the stewardship of the estate.
